Mysterious Collectors
Behind the big prices are big personalities — most of them wearing masks. These are the pseudonymous patrons who shaped the Pepe and crypto-art markets, and whose real identities were never truly unmasked.
Vincent Van Dough
Vincent Van Dough (VVD) is the closest thing the Pepe world has to a Renaissance patron with a ski mask on. A pseudonymous mega-collector — an original CryptoPunk claimer who said he'd spent $20M+ on NFTs by 2021 — he became a central patron of Fake Rares, the Rare Scrilla-led successor movement, even curating its Series 8 “Summer of Pepe” and commissioning artists into the space. He co-runs the PepePawnShop and the Art of This Millennium gallery brand.
His most consequential act, though, was financial: in August 2021 he launched Starry Night Capital, a ~$100M NFT fund, with the founders of Three Arrows Capital. Its spectacular collapse a year later became a landmark of the era — a story we tell in full here.
