The Lost-Seed Saga

When John Villar died in March 2021, his cards didn't just lose their maker — for over a year, they lost their keys. Access to his wallet was gone, and a chunk of his work — including scarce cards like PEPETRO — sat frozen and unobtainable. Scarcity did what scarcity does: prices climbed as the market realised those cards might never move again.

Then the story turned. His brother, Javier Varona Zavatti, managed to recover the seed from John's phone. He began carefully releasing and selling the cards — and floor prices came back down as supply returned to the market — while also returning some creators' assets to them on request. A frozen estate, thawed by a brother finishing what his sibling couldn't.

The open free-for-all (a one-of-a-kind event)

Rare Pepe history has exactly one event of its kind: an open, permissionless distribution scramble. After a creator's wallet was compromised and assets were drained, the response was extraordinary — rather than let a thief keep the spoils, the wallet was deliberately opened up so the community could race to rescue what remained, funding the account and pulling assets out as fast as transactions could clear. For a brief window, a locked wallet became a public scramble. There has been nothing else like it.
